Florida Became Freedom

Pencil shavings became a sign of accomplishments

A’s became common

Teachers became leaders

School became a creative space.

Glances became kisses

Kisses became silence

Fights became a war

Battles became two soldiers scorned.

Paint became relief

Paper became lace

Pencils became scenes

Art became my escape.

Interstate lines became hope

Florida became freedom

Alabama became nostalgia

North Carolina became a constant.

Interest became curiosity

Searching became a career option

Animation became a slight possibility

Vet became the dream.

Mountains became a cold fortress

The sea became my only refuge

Summer heat became autumn leaves

Indian summers became winter.

A new year became an old

Previous opinions became new

Time became an old friend

I became me.
