Vicissitude
They say it doesn't matter how many breaths you take,
but how many moments take your breath away.
What they don't tell you,
is that it takes ten times longer to put yourself back together than it does to fall apart.
They don't tell you about the moments that you feel your chest collapsing
or how it gets harder to breathe every time someone tells you goodbye.
It's the littlest things that leave the deepest scars
and a hollow aching in your bones.
It's the phone calls you stopped getting
and the text message they send back that reads
"sorry, who is this?"
That will make your hands shake
and leave the inside of your cheek tasting like iron and blood.
Trying to understand how things change so quickly
feels like trying to fit the Atlantic Ocean into a shot glass.
They say that one door closes so that another can open,
but maybe I should just use the window.
