To Shut a Mute
Words hardly describe
The world he sees.
Hand motions do not
Give him the peace he needs.
He draws then,
A mermaid in the sea
And an enormous ship.
We see the waves evolve
From lines to swirls
And the water change from
Blue to misty green.
The sky turns yellow
And the sun gleams
while the dolphins swim
Across the scene.
Alas, he stands
To proudly show his art
For everyone to see.
There are no words that can be heard
Or gestures that make sense
But the one thing he knows
Is that he’ll never try again.
