Motherhood

Location

I left them behind in the airport

   and forgot to look back

Eight months and twenty-eight days

this country has been growing in me

kicking until I crumble and stand back up

and I eat for two mouths

as if I may never taste again

They say motherhood changes you

return to America with aching feet

a child grown from roots in foreign tongue

in my arms and wonder if they

   will still know my face
