Depths of Shame

It's simply futile treading cold water

Rising past my green ankles

O how its barbarous teeth bite and sting!

My toes are engulfed by sea's spiteful jaws

Veins pierced by blind eyes;

Warmth is devoured

Merciless waves slobber on copper hair

Tingling spreads from fingers to palms

Breathing echoes in my ears

Rhythmic crashing

Come cruel morning,

Light flashing

Drowning, drowning, drowning

Smothered in shame

Deserving of retribution, am I?

I confess to my crime, I confess!

My lips have birthed a lie

Of which I am not boastful

I confess, I do

Must I drown any deeper?

Dear water, you are chilling
