Dear Colored People,
Colored or not! We are people and should be treated as so.
Colored or not! I still have to take on the many challenges that come within a day.
The queen did love red,
and so red she wore.
There was red in her kitchen,
her bathroom, the floor.
She prized her red glasses
she always kept close,
for they made what she saw
I am incapable of self-identifying.
Everything I'd claim, you'd think I'm lying.
How can I say I am "made in America,"
when I am a product assembled with
I go to school, isn't it obvious?
Sixteen year old girl with a backpack,
It's pretty clear to see.
I go to classes, then lunch, then class again,
Hop the bus, go home, do homework go to bed.
Everyone keeps staring at me
My belly swells and my feet hurt
I didnt ask for this change
I didnt ask for this experience
stop staring at me please
judging me in your head
whispers in the shadow of my back
The Civil Rights Movement,
A time of lament
For the many lives lost
That stood up without a cost.
A voice for the people was what they all yearned
But many refused to rebel to avoid a worse turn.
