Love and loss

An old confusion found in bits on the carpet.
An old friend who I hate.
And old promises I made.
Full circles from bar room floors.
Friends in this life are important.
Death is better with someone you love.
I shout your name
And you are silent
I touch your hand
But still you do not embrace
Through all my attempts of breaking through
You never moved or gave me face
So instead
I shouted at a mountain peak
On New Year's turn
We peer
beyond the floodlit glass
into the night falling
we rise and rise and ride
up silver splinter
I know no thirst, behind this peace of mind
No familiar faces, behind this peace of mind
Abandoned trust, behind this peace of mind
Broken, death will come some day
Ill-exposed by all the lies told
Every morning after, I cried to God
Pleading that he’d be merciful and wake us both
From the nightmare of your passing
And grant us instead
