For You

For You

If I tore apart my body

For you

And you examined my organs

Tested my blood

Ripped my skin

Piece by piece

Cell by cell

For you

Would it look the same

As everyone else

Because it feels like hate has been rooted

Inside of me

Spreading like

A mutating cancer

Until that is all I am

Born from hate

Consumed by hate

Am I accountable

For being born

A certain race

Am I accountable

For being a mistake

In your eyes?

Because all you see when you look

At me

Or her

Or him

Or them

Is brown, black

And you’re blinded by the color

Of our skin

Your eyes don’t let you see

Our true beauty within

Because I deserve

Just as much as anyone else

And so do my friends

But instead my whole life

I have to prove myself

I have to prove that

I deserve to live

For you

This poem is about:
Me
