The Turtle

I was given a gift by someone I truly loved,

A little green turtle,

Something I could put on my key ring.

She had one too,

And it made our love grow stronger,

Knowing that when we weren’t together,

We were still connected.

She left, and I kept the turtle near me,

Afraid that if I let it go,

Then I’d let her go.

She told me she didn’t love me anymore,

That her turtle was lost,

And I was stuck with a decision

Keep the turtle,

And always be reminded of what I lost

Or toss it away,

And hopefully forget…

I can’t keep this turtle,

But I can’t lose it either,

So by default, It remains by my side,

And it hurts every time it clinks against my keys
