A Reflection on Beauty

Beauty is a broken mirror.
You try to pick up the pieces
Not caring that the sharp edges
Pierce your natural skin.
The rough edges scar your body;
They create jagged lines across something
Already beautiful.
The shards twist your beautiful reflection
Into a distorted image.
So you keep picking up the pieces
And the "beauty" you seek keeps scarring you.
We ask you, "Are you okay?"
You answer, "I'm fine! I want this."
But we know you're not fine.
We see the lines across your body.
And one day we'll get you to look at yourself
Without that broken mirror.
You'll see how beautiful you really are and say,
"I don't need this. I am already beautiful."
