promise me

I need you to promise me you'll pick up the pieces of my heart that are broken,

for I am afraid that if too many pieces are lost,

I'll lose myself completely,

and my tears will begin to drown out your words as you try to speak truth over me.

I'll listen but my mind will run with the worst possibilties and I'll start to ignore your words,

even if it's the last thing I want to do.

My chest will feel like it's closing in on itself and I'll distance myself in fear of the pain this will cause me,

I'll regret spending so much time loving you because in the end it's only hurt that's left.

I don't know if I'll be able to handle it.

But I know when things are done and over, and the pain isn't as strong,

I won't regret one minute I shared with you.

Because it will have been you who made me believe in love again.

It will have beeen you who helped me learn to love myself.

So please,

promise me that when that day comes,

you'll hold me until my tears stop running and I realize I'm going to be okay on my own.
