On Easter
On Easter, a day
thousands of years old,
traditions have changed
but the story’s retold.
From Eastern festivals
to Christian new life,
to bunnies and baskets
and fields with eggs rife.
A springtime fête
the flowers in bloom.
Anticipating Easter,
We endure winter’s gloom.
The retailers scheme
Bright colors, eye-catching.
New dresses and hats!
The ladies look fetching.
Sunday morning church—
dogwoods and crosses—
Simple-sweet sermons,
Hope for life’s losses
Smile for pictures:
Look cute, maybe flirty!
Then change from new clothes
lest they get dirty.
Families, gather!
The food is prepared.
Eggs are hard-boiled,
Bountiful feasts shared.
Now, out-of-doors!
Parents, get ready!
Eggs, hidden away—
skilled hunters are heady.
Easter to summer,
the heat comes and goes.
A whole year passes
Before one even knows.
It is time again:
Cut grass, plant flowers—bright, bold!
From last year find un-found
Eggs, full of rot and mold.
