Midnight December 2008:
Awakened
The cool air filled with emotions
A white blanket covered the dried brown grass
War Baby Comes to America
By Faizah Uddin
My grandmother births
war baby
in hiding. In 1971. In what will become Bangladesh.
Brother, father. A son and daughter.
See, fresh water.
Look, there’s an otter!
What’s an otter doing underwater?
dear sir from dhaka bangladesh i have
read your story in the internet
of your father’s land that you inherited
when you were only five
and now the river that ran through this
Thee look’d out the window with nay more light.
A plague; gray ash, dust, and woe filled the sky.
When the smoke cleared, all was lost in the fight,
And marry from thee my strength rose up high.
Like many others who came to this country
from a distant world,
I pushed my way from Bangladesh
where there are many conflicts and there is no safety.
I am like a clementine
Poor Kids in Bangladesh
Poor kids in Bangladesh;
sweat, tears, heat, fears.
Poor kids in Bangladesh.
