An American Sin

Location

She is pretty

One eye is

Just a bit greener

And she has

A beauty mark

Next to her lips

That’s hidden

In the crease of

Her smile

Because she’s almost always

Smiling.

And she is smart,

Adventurous,

And funny.

I am proud to love her.

Because if I didn’t

I would be just like everyone else

Unsatisfied and angry

At what they see

When they look in the mirror.

And it is so wrong

That it is so shocking

That this is about myself.

Because everyone

Should feel this way.

Everyone

Should look in the mirror

And smile.

Unfortunately,

We shame people like me.

Conceited

Asshole

Douchebag

Vain

Proud

We make it seem like it’s a sin to love you.

The girl in the mirror

Will never be perfect.

But she will always be

Everything I need her to be;

And that is more than enough for me to love.
