What Do You See?

Tue, 05/09/2017 - 18:30 -- Anaiahm

What do you see when you look at me?

Do you see a threat or do you see me?

From my beautiful black nappy hair all the way down to my black feet.

When I look in the mirror, I see me.

I love me.

I am the crowd that shouts and pleads for equality.

I am every little black girl and boy.

But do you really see me for me?

Or do you want to shame me for being me?

Do you want people to hate the black genes that run through me?

Well, sorry to say, but no man will every trick my brothers and sisters and me out of out rightful place.

You want to make "America great again," but when was it ever great for me?

When was it great for us?

So, what do you see when you look at us?

Do you see black thugs with guns and black teenage mothers?

Or do you see a community struggling for a voice?

Will you help others see us for us

Or will you fall silent and shame us?
