Voices

A smile that is what I show
Behind it a tortured mind that no one will ever know
I walk my line, I do my time
I try to be respectable, caring, and refined
But on the inside what one does not see
A mind split in two, and psychotic tragedy
Two voices, one head, arguing over what the other had said
Never a second of peace in my mind
One is emotion, the other is thought
Both can be cruel, whether honest or not
One tears me apart for what I am
“You’re stupid, you’re ugly, not even half a man”
The other brings guilt in on the air of my sigh
“How can you feel sorry? How can you cry?
There are plenty of other worse off than you
You should be ashamed right now for what you do”
It is these two voices that ruin my way
Any hope, any light, of some better day
But still I grin, and smile away
People can’t know of the voices today
