A Ride

Location

“Can I please have a ride?”

It’s a simple enough question.

But laced with barbed wire.

A huge favor to me

A way for me to work

But an inconvenience to you.

A chore

I don’t want a friendship based off of keeping score.

That’s a poisonous precedent

With implications that stretch vast

How can I make things right?

It feels like for every good thing I do to help

I can never climb out of the pit of debt

My fingers grasp the edge

But are promptly crunched by another favor.

Circumstance crushes my chances

Because I still need a ride the next day.
