Pearls

Some days she laughed

and it felt like sunshne on my skin,

and when she smiled it smelled like sugar.

But some days she cried.

Oh, some days she cried.

And the car has never been so cold.

Her mother told her

"The world is your oyster," but

she said it felt more like an ocean,

she said she wished she bothered

to learn how to swim.

But I held onto her,

when the salt was filling her

ears, her eyes, her mouth.

I made sure that she wouldn't drown.

And I just wonder

when the water

got shallow enough

that she didn't need me,

that she didn't love me,

that she didn't need me anymore.
