My Roots are Kinky
Location
History has shaped the way we feel, think, and act.
Time heals most things, but it doesn't change the past.
Many people today, African-Americans especially
Have done many things that just aren't necessary.
Perming their hair, bleaching their skin
Doing these things so that they can fit in.
People need to be comfortable in the skin they're in.
Accept who you are,
Flaunt it everywhere
Wear your OWN style,
Rock your natural hair.
You do you, and people will do the same
Don't be afraid to do your own thing.
We are all different;
We should embrace that
No matter if your tall, small, skinny, or fat.
My flesh, my bones, the skin I'm in.
The blood in my veins.
My features; my name.
Oxygen in the air that flows and goes through my body.
My attitude that can be nice, kind, and sometimes naughty.
My roots are kinky.
The way I walk; the way I talk
The curve on my body. My smile
That makes every and anything worthwhile.
The way I can sweet talk, and let you hear what you want to hear.
The attitude that comes off as "I don't care."
My grace, my comfort, my vibrant energy
Yes, all these things make me, me.
Oh, my roots are kinky.
Thick, soft, cotton-feeling...
Coarse, yet smooth.
Together the strands make such a beauty;
Nothing needs to be done.
Beautiful texture,
Small, tight curls...
A wonderful feeling many would love to have in this world.
My roots... Oh yes, my roots are kinky.
Why fit in? We were born to stand out.
Keep your kinky roots,
Wear your style out.
Be yourself, and allow people to do the same.
You know yourself better than anyone;
They just know your name.
Accept who you are,
Flaunt it everywhere
Wear your OWN style,
Rock your natural hair.
