I Looked

I looked for life
on a dusty trail
kicking a rock for miles
and I saw a shooting star.

I looked for life
up in the sky
watched the birds soar
and saw shapes in the clouds.

I looked for life
wading in the river
splashed water in my eyes
and I saw trout leap.

I looked for life
out on my worn porch chair
chatted with a neighbor
and saw love and laughter.

Yes, I looked for life
to know where it was wrought
and found myself within it
and this is what I thought:

That life is in the living--
living large and free
in simple details everywhere
just walk and look and see.
