I know why the willow grows

I know why the willow grows.

It grows for a life it yearns to know.

It grows for you. It grows for me.

It grows so tall for all to see.

The willow grows because it can

because no one told it that it can’t.

Sometimes it weeps, branches low,

but ignores the pain and learns to grow.

It builds its armor thick and strong

to last through winters cold and long.

It stretches out with many leaves

to catch the wind and ride the breeze.

I know why the willow grows

because growing is the life it chose.

Filled with hope and filled with life

it will grow both day and night.

It can not whisper where the leaves will blow,

but it always knows that it will grow.
