in history class

we learn that women

have never been equal to men

in science

the teacher tells us that

women are fragile

not only our bodies, but our spirits

can be easily crushed

in math

the boy in the corner

tells the girl beside him

to go to the kitchen where she belongs

his classmate high fives him

and as nervous laughter fills the room

the air

in my lungs turns to

drowning me from the inside out

women have never been equal to men

but we didn't need to go to history class

to know that
