The right to an education,
Is guaranteed.
To everyone.
This means that we are all,
On even ground in school.
And have equal opportunities to learn
And excel in our studies.
But just where
Do our circumstances
Factor in to this equality?
If I go to bed hungry every night,
Do I really have the same the opportunities?
To excel as those that do not feel, in class, the sharp pangs of hunger?
Say my peers,
Launch nothing but sharp words and nasty sneers
In my direction?
Will their cutting remarks not affect my chances to succeed?
And perhaps I work every night,
To put food in my family’s mouth
And come home late; disillusioned and beat,
Can I devote the time necessary to my schoolwork?
Or will my education also be a victim to circumstance?
