Growing into Sleep

Growing up is just like falling asleep.

It will happen all at once, yet so slow

that it will begin and you will not know.

You will find yourself less given to weep,

and slowly lose count of all of the sheep.

There’ll no longer be excitement in new snow,

and you’ll have to turn down the light’s bright glow

so that you may fall into a sleep so deep.

While you’re asleep you’ll dream wonderful things,

but forget most dreams as quick as they come,

just as daydreams are lost in life’s mad thrum.

And though you will smile at what life brings,

and though your heart’ll still beat like a drum,

asleep or growing, you’ll soon become numb.
