Dancing Shadows

By Laquanna Allen

In today’s society

There is only one thing you can be

The bully or the bullied

Round and round

Like a top it spins

A vicious cycle that never ends

I will not live in a nation

Where I’m defined

By my sexual orientation

I refuse to live in a hell

When I am merely

Known as a number on a scale

All of the pain knotted

And threaded into a rope

There hangs our youth, future, and hopes

Anger grows like tall oak trees

warmness sewn into the winter breeze

Birds hunt and engulf the bees

I will stay here

Til it’s dark

Til me and my shadow part
