Alone

The first ones to learn, the first ones to go

The oldest children are the first to know

The American dream, enticingly close

To our immigrant families who love us most

My parents’ dream for my future success

My generation’s biggest test

To grow up in the famed America, blessed

But never forgetting our own culture’s best

My siblings walk behind me

Learning from my mistakes

Using the worn down trail

And following in my wake

Parents give their blessings to the first ones to go

But in the end I take on the foreign world, alone
