How can we say

we live in the land of the free

while the homes of the brave

are being taken away         

 

How can we ignore

the illness and poverty

suffered so immensely

in our own communities

 

How can we say

we don’t have enough

while our pockets are full

and our bodies are clothed

inside of a warm home

with a warm meal

 

How can we dismiss

the hunger and the pain

so commonly felt by children

who don’t yet know

how to walk

or even how to talk

 

Why don’t we stop

why don’t we think

and instead of saying

we can’t do anything

why don’t we start trying

 

So we can stop waiting

for someone else

to do what we can only talk about
