I stand facing east
Alone, quiet, still.
Only one companion --
A proud cactus standing tall.
Together we watch the cold night
Become the hot day.
Dry baked rocks beneath us,
The mighty sun punishes all that stay out for to long, the Arizona Rattlesnake awaits for dawn when the sizzling sun cools, it hunts its prey, the desert mice that scurry and play.

It started with a light
a single life.
the light under the door
coming through the cracks in the windows
cracks under the lids
of my eyes
waking slowly
in your arms.
I want to be a cactus.
I want to be rough around
the edges;
To form an armour around
my skin.
To be free from what
Most think that beauty is.
I want to be a cactus.
