Words that Shape Me

There is the saying that goes
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But words do not hurt me

Words, that’s were it all started
Words that stated we weren’t equal
Words that stated we were a lower class
Words that belittled our race

These words did so much
They did more than inflict physical pain
These words tore down a race for generations
These words help inflict so much hate

But these words did not keep us down forever
These words inspired leaders that were willing to fight
Willing to fight against such prejudice and say “No More”
Willing to back down no longer or cower
But to fight for what they deserve

Freedom, Equality, Justice
The words that once hurt a race
Now became words that inspired a movement
A movement that is still being fought
The right for equality for all
