The Wolf

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~
When he said he loved me
I thought it was the truth
But when he sent me down with shame
I knew it was a lie

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how

~

So young and lost he took my hand
His love putting others to shame
For a while it was warm and full of hope
But he soon turned cold as ice

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how

~

In searching for a mate to trust
A wolf I found instead
I fell into a state of wanderlust
In which he made my bed

~

I wasn't who I was before

As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~

The cave in which I was hid away
Kept me from family and friends
Soon enough it was just us
He had schemed his evil plan

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~

Days and weeks
His anger grew
My will had thinned
I was trapped within his jaws

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how

~

From months to years
I thought the fight was lost
In every battle I had been bested
He had but won and at what cost

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how

~

But a sudden turn our tale would take
A threat to my life had taken place
He was losing control
A frightening truth he refused to face

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how

~

While in the car a fight ensued
His anger had taken hold
His grip was swift
Hitting the wall was his primary goal

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how

~

We did not wreck nor were we harmed
But warrior within rose that day
I said I was done and would have no more
His face showed shock and dismayed

~

I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~
This time was his to beg and plead
On the drive we went
Nothing he said made me concede
Every word a lie concealed

~

I wasn't who I was before

As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~
That night I left with a bag of objects
Things I thought I could not do without
Still he sent pleas and apologies through text
Thinking it would be like times before
~
I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~
But this was the last of his face I saw
Even when I returned for the rest of my things
He had moved out, he let me go
I still wonder why it was so easy
~
I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~
Days and weeks
The only feeling I felt was free
I had some bad days but most were good
But the past I started to see
~
I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how

~

From months to years
The unseen scars rose to the surface
I flenched and froze when the thought of him rose
And have not gotten through the anxiety
~
I wasn't who I was before
As I am now
I picked myself up off the floor
Some still ask how
~
They think when you leave that the suffering ends
But the memories will haunt you daily
Some days just walking is the hardest of tasks
But I always thank my lucky stars that it is no longer on glass
