Why Poetry

Mon, 03/28/2016 - 15:04 -- AFTRHR

Have you ever just sat down and wondered,

Why poetry?

Was it an escape from the harsh reality:

Pain demanding to be felt

The loss of your loved ones

The painful memories of the mistakes you’ve made

The dad you never knew

Watching the love of your life in the arms of another

Why poetry?

Could words on a paper make you feel any less alone then you feel now?

Can someone else’s view of the world change yours?

Is this poet any more different than you or I?

Why poetry?

They keep saying you’ll be fine

But we all know that’s a lie

I chose poetry to vanquish my demons

To confess my mistakes and then pardon them

Preserve the memories of my loved ones

Embrace the love once lost, because the heartbreak is nothing compared to the love itself

I chose poetry to give pain a rain check

Do not wear tragedies as shackles, wear them like armor

I will overcome the pain that so holds me down

Why poetry? This is why.
