What Is Funny?

Funny things are only funny when we have time to laugh,

To sing on about jolly nonsense until reality gives us a bath.

The tough thing about the rules of funny is that it must begin in pain.

A broken heart, losing a friend, or crying out in the cold, bitter rain.

To construct a joke you must be made the joke, unable to process the grief.

Destroy all of your fragile hopes, joys, loves and even your strongest belief.

But once the destruction has been endured the race is not quite finished.

No, first you must rebuild your strength, your resolve and old life be diminished.

Something a new arises inside, is that a laugh, a giggle, a chuckle I hear?

You must be insane, mad, and honestly more than a bit off, it’s clear.

But oh for those that have been through the hellish landscape you’ve tread,

They’ll get it, they’ll return the laugh hysterical, you’ll knock them dead.
