We Are Not Who They Say We Are

I am told

Because of my color

I am greater than no other

My skin defines who I am,

I am told, and therefore

I am expected not to be bold

I am stronger than the stereotypes

I am greater than the hype

I am more than the expectations set upon me

In this lifetime

Brother and sisters of color

We rise

We rise not as the stereotypes

We will get an education

We will seek our liberation

We will defeat perpetration

We will not stand in humiliation

We are greatness and no one

No one can tell us any better

Of our potential
