War's Sting

A family is left heartbroken

And so many words unspoken

A soldier leaves them to fight

So freedom can see another day's light

They wait in hopes that he would return

His presence and love did they yearn

His letters kept them going

How much he loved them, he made sure they were knowing

An unexpected knock they heard one day

Two solemn men at the door, searching for words to say

Her heart sank like a stone

"I'm sorry, your husband isn't coming home."

She cradles the folded flag close to her heart

And repeats her wedding vows, "Till death do us part."

And if I could change one thing

It would be that no one feels death's sting

Because of a war being fought

Instead, peace would be sought

And war will end someday

But until then we'll say

Stay true

To the red, white, and blue

Until God calls us home, too.
