Like Walking on the Sun

I throw a rock onto the flaring surface.

It sizzles,

Crackles.

Sputters

As the last bit of mineral disintegrates into nothing.

Testing the waters, I suppose

So I stand, looking out at the twinkling lights of the black nothing.

The glistening rings in the distance,

The thick rocky belt floating through the abyss.

I sense the tranquility.

No screech of sirens,

No screams or sadness.

Just silence.

Serenity.

They sent me up here

To be their rock.

They throw me out,

Waiting, watching.

Will I sizzle?

Will I crackle,

Sputtering as the last bit of me disintegrates into nothing?

Testing the waters I suppose

I’m hanging on the edge,

Fingers slipping as you tell me it’ll be alright.

Heat overwhelms me

As my legs are closer and closer to touching the flaming surface.

Should I do it?

Should I let go?

No more playing it safe.

I don’t want to crash and burn,

But I am done testing the waters.

And I jump.
