Two Things

Location

Sitting on this moldy sofa

At this boring party

Everyone around me

Acting like they’re the hottest thing

I’m watching them all

Pondering

All the life advice I’ve heard

About individuality

And I can’t help but notice

That everyone I see

Is acting like another person

No one has a true self

And we’re all just trying to fit into the norm.

I can’t help but ask

Why is it

that we constantly push for self acceptance

We teach kids to be themselves

We preach the word “honesty” in yellow letters on a chalkboard

But yet

Aren’t we all

Pretending to be someone else?

We are a race of followers

trying to set an example

by following the original one

about how life is supposed to be lived.

In other words,

more normal words

There

is

no

such

thing

as

cool.

There

is

only

normal

and

unconventional

And even though some try to break the boundaries

As I look around

I’m beginning to think

That

the

latter

of

those

two things

doesn’t

exist

either.
