Timeline of a Word

Time has passed

Little change to show for it

Years ago Kunta was whipped,

Rosa was arrested

Martin was shot,

Malcolm’s death was orchestrated

Music was stolen

driven away in chic Cadillacs

mashed potatoed to on American Bandstand‘s negro day

All there is to show

for a monumental movement

is the abolition

o the term negro,

the 2nd coming of the word:

Nigger.

And every day it grows

Bigger and BIGGER

everywhere I turn

I hear the word.

Six measly letters

get my blood boiling

Like a slave's ham bone stew

Like a massa' ravaging his wife—

creating a race of mulattos

So tired of hearing

the excuse hat by using the word

a culture is embraced

Because when I hear someone call their "friend"

a Nigger

I picture Rodney King

blood dripping down his chocolate face—

A term of endearment?

I see Miley Cyrus

telling young people hat being

a Nigger

is a "lifestyle"

And I agree.

IT WAS,

But not like the hip hop videos

flashing money

Rosay bottle in hand

Being a Nigger

marked

pain and suffering.

I could never wrap my head around

the replacement of the letter "A"

rather than an "ER" suffix –

change someone from an ignorant, lowlife

to a sistah or companion

Why do blacks get upset

when other races call each other

Niggers

When they themselves started the trend

So I start to think about our society

Trying to trace back the timeline to when—

Advocates died for what are now

lost causes and

when dimensional hate

transitioned to

falsified Love
