There is something I know now that I didn't know then...

There is something I know now that I didn't know then...

Back when recess existed and kids ran

To play games of tag or house or kick-ball

Back when I thought there was only right or wrong

No concept of nuance, no wavering songs

A misunderstanding of what it means to be good

Because even adults have demons under hoods

Some hold prejudices set in stone

Others mold words into knives for certain kids alone

It took time for me to comprehend, you see

Because nothing shines quite as beautifully

As the shattered lies of democracy

Where diversity and independence

Have been traded for complacency and resentment
