A Sigh of Relief

Location

His fire burns, his fury builds.
His screams of rage fill the air.
I stand still.
On the outside I look calm,
but my eyes reveal terror.
Appalling questions escape his lips.
Horrendous accusations.
I can only whisper a solemn "no."
His face twists into a frown of disgust,
and a searing heat stings my face.
His slap is of disappointment.
Time stops.
Silence rings in my ears.
My cheek burns red.
I quickly turn, saying nothing.
The feeling of freedom rushes through me.
It's fragile existence within my grasp.
I'm yanked back by my hair,
back into my horrid reality.
A moment of terror as I fall through the air,
hearing his maniacal laughter behind me.
My head whips the ground.
A cry escapes my lips, one of agony,
and his laughter grows louder.
Everything goes limp.
Everything turns black.
Everything turns quiet.
My mind is no longer thinking.
My lungs are no longer breathing.
My heart is no longer beating.
He feels no remorse.
Everyone else feels sorrow,
but I feel eternally relieved.
