In Service
Dust swirls around my face
My shirt sticks, reluctant to release my back
Hot sun covers everything, and brightens the area
Dogs pant as they trot past, looking for water
Families are gather supplies and nails
Setting up new homes for those in need
Last time I looked,
A young girl should not be building a home…
But I try my best
The foreman checks my work and grins
Helping me with the taller areas
Last time I checked,
A short girl should not be on a tall ladder…
I hammer and teeter, then descend with a pounding heart
Then smile at the small support beam I helped to nail in place.
Last time I turned around,
Service is a great way to say I care.
