That September Night

That September

I didn't know my life would change.
I went out to have fun. I didn't think I'd meet someone who'd define my year.

That October

Your other world came crashing down.
From two houses to one, I was the place you now had to seek refuge.

That November

We sit together at the party.
Wrapped in each other's arms, I see no one else but you.

That December

I didn't realize how hard it would be.
Apart for the first time, my heart aches in a way unfamiliar.

That March

It is my birthday.
You tell me how much you love me. I tell you right back.

That May

I meet your family for the first time.
With each warm hug, I wonder why your embraces don't feel the same.

That July

I lie in my bed next to you.
I don't know if this is love. I don't know if we're supposed to be like this.

This August

Almost a year later,
I don't know if my life had changed.
