Puzzle Pieces

He’s just like you and I;

He has eyes and hands,

A heart with a constant beat and

Blood that flows from his head to his toes

He cries when he’s broken

And screams when he’s mad

Sometimes the two are indistinguishable.

Her screams ring out like bells in a church yard,

People scatter, afraid…

Afraid of what?

Afraid of the child, who cannot speak,

The child who wails to communicate her needs

He hits, he kicks… the people stare.

Why must they stare?

Move on with your lives

You didn’t like when people stared at your kids.

Return the favor.

She loves to tap her dolls on the table

They make loud noises

Over and over again

But it feels good to her

Just like us shaking a leg

Or chewing a pen cap

Why take that away?

He watches Elmo at 16…

What’s wrong with that?

I watch SpongeBob and I’m 20

It’s simple

And the tunes are catchy.

Society sets a higher bar

For people with Autism;

Rules are stricter

People are quicker to judge.

Reality is, we all have it in us.

We’re all a little bit autistic inside.
