Playing Dress Up

Tue, 06/02/2015 - 19:56 -- s200g6

When I was a little girl, I loved to play dress up
I would go into our basement where we had a barrel full of clothes from times past
And I would live in those times
And everyone smiled and laughed

Girls still like to play dress up
But in a different way

That’s what’s wrong with society today
It’s that girls think they need to dress a certain way
To be loved and cherished and cared for.

But this is not true; it just puts more stress on me and on you.
The images come into our minds oscillating and swirling and mixing and confusing-
Until we no longer see ourselves,
But the brands we wear

We see price tags and stick thin figures and look past our own big personalities

The clothes I wear now look good today
But in the future will only decay
In the coffin with this body that I neglected to see for the positive.

Girls are constantly searching for something more
Because they don’t know what they are looking for

Some kind of material fulfillment that will last an hour
When the real problem will go on for forever
Unless you start appreciating who you are and not what you fit into

Our culture is formed on the backs of adolescent girls who just want to be popular and look pretty and skinny

It’s not right but who will listen?
These girls don’t understand
When the eyes of society glisten
With tears of joy as it grovels in success of these young girls’ submission

Putting pressure on girls to always look their best
Constantly striving to conform to this image,
We feed this monster with our hard earned money month after month
We see the fads change year after year
We sell our lives to this malignant trend generation after generation

Skirt up, shirt down!
Conforming to this idea of beauty until we are no longer human but a shell-
Covered in greasy pigment with charcoal around our eyes
Squeezing into yoga pants and shivering in the cold because
It’s “uncool” to wear a coat

So try on a new mindset
And get off of the worldly swing set
Push the button that says reset

And start again
Leave the movie set
Cause all the worlds a stage
And we are just playing a part

There is something more
There is someone who offers love

So when you get dressed in the morning
Don’t think about what they’ll say

It will take some getting used too
But don’t let it phase you
Think about the one who loves you

Because he’s all that matters

When I was a little girl, I loved to play dress up
And I still do
