Perceived Fate

Deep in the darkness of the forest
The quiet death lay
So still and so pale,
It's sight darkens the day.

As you approach it,
You hesitate suddenly.
To go forward would mean what?
What's under the dark tree?

Somewhere behind you,
A long howl sounds.
Shivers run up your spine, you freeze.
Should you turn around?

What fate lay behind you?
Is it the same as before you?
Or is the cause of what lies ahead
Is what's stalking you, waiting to strike you?
