Oldie hits dear mommy

Dear Mommy,

I don’t know if you remember but, I remember a simpler time when it was just me and you...

alone in the car with only our thoughts and radio. To be specific, the quiet storm.

I also remember why we would be on the road with just our thoughts and the radio.

You had no babysitter so there I was... with you, your thoughts and the radio. I was a curious kid and never really understood what job you were doing when you said “servicing papers”

But I knew we had a long ride ahead of us as we drove

the dark roads.

Barely a soul insight…

On those dark nights with us, our thoughts and the radio.

I realize now that my thoughts were always on what the radio was playing with oldie hits such as September, Lover’s Holiday, Kiss of Life, Sweet Love, Sweet Thang, etc.

The first question I never failed to ask was

“Is she/he dead?”

Way too young to comprehend that old music doesn’t equal dead people.

You would then give me lesson on the person in questioning and tell me their list of hits.

Sometimes you would start singing their song in an off- pitch voice that I thought was so beautifully harmonizing.

Now, I’m older and we no longer have those long car rides where we are just surrounded by the dark night with the dark roads, our thoughts and the radio.

But,

I still remember those calming times every time I hear those oldie hits...
