My Job Is Changing My Life

Location

The role I took on is not one for the weak.

I must be strong for the patient in my care.

I am the advocate for those who cannot speak.

I breathe for them when they can no longer move air.

I am their heartbeat when theirs gives out.

I am always being put to the test.

I am the one who you will hear shout

At my driver to say, “HE’S IN ARREST.”

In the back of the ambulance, in my domain,

I am now your life source.

The pressure is enough to make a man go insane,

But I overcome and stay focused, of course.

This job is not one that only benefits me,

But I will admit, my life truly began the day I said, “I will be an E.M.T.”
