The Monarch

That morning the sum glared over the castle,

casting rainbows on the walls, and in

the colossal thrown room, the grand thrown room,

a whimsical woman waited, and for a moment

the future came to her:

peasants falling at her feet, peasants falling

at her children’s feet, her own kingdom

filling with magnificent glee, strangers coming to gawk,

a girl in her presence writing a poem, the sun shining into it,

a woman controlling her future, thinking of prosperity,

thinking of her coronation, and of the future rising

and taking the world by surprise and leaving a poem behind
