Midnight in the Mind of Men
Darkness stood
in the fathomless night
Black but for the artillery
shells exploding against the sky.
Silent but for the steel
stinging through the air.
Whole boys, whole companies,
Whole armies creeping,
creeping through the hell
To create more hell
with the hounds grinning
at their heels.
And even in the day,
darkness stands
And the blackest night
Never ends
