memorize

people ask me all the time
how come you never memorize any of your poems

i tell them, when i memorize something, another thought infiltrates my mind

in which a word leaks, i write until i complete my thoughts
There were moments when colleagues would point to me and declare;
why don't you write notes during meetings
And all I honestly tell them
that's another excuse to fit in the job world where you don't belong

It’s like replaying a track repeatedly
until the lyrics stimies my brain cell to know it by heart
like it ain't hard to tell by nas, one of my favorite rap songs
from my ipod in my pocket listening to my headphones

to the crowded New York City train where people yell out lyrics drunken by inconsideration to others

i'm sure we did this at one time or another

i'm not trying to transform the periodic truth table in a chemistry class into
some randomize hip hop stanzas
that's not the way i operate

what I do is memorize lyrics word for word that speaks to me
rhythmic syllables, punctuated deep provoking ideas that ignites truth
as i speak to the lyrics
someone will be listening.

words are meant to be said and travel
in the veins that bring them to our heart
with every heartbeat in my chest that passes upward to my esophagus

ready to explode out of my mouth
don't matter how long it is

or how long it takes

whether its ten lines or ten pages
I’ll memorize it because it's so fresh
the story is so fitting in
my mind wraps around completing my thoughts with conviction
whisper them from any starting point that's lethal and deadly

every poem echoes messages that injects life to lost souls
every heartbeat pumps more blood to my body
infusing poetry to mean more than just words

it's how you make words a mighty weapon like God's right hand
if you don’t believe me

as other poetic legends who are true to themselves
true poets and spoken word artists live off the adrenaline rush

ready to dazzle the crowd

Our eyes are our notebooks that sees what we wrote

memories inspire to glorify like God's triumphant victories over hateful enemies
nervosuness trembles, but voices narrates a true story
sweat on foreheads, eyes burning under spotlights that reminds us
we are all still human; at the same time doesn't stop one's drive
words are traceable to its origin of initial ideas
some of us, it stamped in our heads that will send away words that brings hope
though some of my poems are about as long as a boring english professor's lectures
I still remember it like it was yesterday

people until this day will ask me
do i memorize my poems
And I say, if i start to memorize something

another thought enters my mind

once that 1st word comes out, my hands write non-stop
like a record.
The more it's getting air play
the more I'll memorize it
poetry is an art form that can be recited like a rap verse
i don't need to carry papers around, that's why smartphones come in handy
where i go

my poems go with me
