A Letter Home

Dear Home,

I laid in your living room with Taylor,

Petting Penny as she fell asleep.

I stood in front of your bright green door with Taylor,

Waiting for Mom to take a picture before our first day of school.

I sat on Dad’s suitcase as he pulled it down your hall

After returning home from a business trip.

I ran into Taylor’s bedroom to jump on his bead and scream

“It’s Christmas! It’s Christmas!”

I looked in my bathroom mirror

As Mom taught me how to put on make-up for the first time.

I sat at your dining room table with my family

As Dad told me to take my elbows off the table and sit up straight.

I doused your kitchen with flour and sugar

As I attempted to bake with my best friend.

I danced through the den with Emily

As we celebrated our latest accomplishments.

Then I cleaned my room and took all of the pictures off of the walls.

I watched Mom take our old toys out of your basement and to Goodwill.

I helped Taylor move the furniture out.

Emily, Mom and I painted over your walls stained with our goofy memories.

Now I stand in front of where you stood, tall and strong.

I strand in front of your bricks scattered on the ground.

I stand in front of the dismantled green door.

I stand where I once slept,

Where I once danced,

Where I once lived,

And I wonder if I’ll ever feel at home again.

Always and Forever,

Ellie
